Anne Boleyn was born to Thomas and Elizabeth Boleyn, Earl and Countess of Wiltshire respectively. Her exact date of birth and place of birth are unknown, but is believed that she was born circa 1501 in Bickling (Norfolk) in England. Anne was an ambitious woman who followed in the footsteps of her ambitious father. She served as a lady-in-waiting to many European queens, including Queen Claude of France. Anne picked up many French customs and practices during the seven years she spent in France. She brought her French style back with her to England, where she served as a lady-in-waiting for Queen Katherine of Aragon. Eventually, Anne caught the eye of King Henry VIII, who was growing frustrated with his marriage and lack of a male heir. Henry and Anne began meeting, and their relationship turned romantic soon after. Henry became enamored with Anne as she promised to make him happy and give him what he most wanted: a son. Driven by love, Henry asked the Pope to annul his marriage to Katherine of Aragon on the grounds that Katherine had been married to his brother. When the Pope denied his request, Henry separated from the Catholic Church and had the Archbishop of Canterbury grant him a divorce. Henry and Anne were then married, and soon after Anne delivered a baby girl, Elizabeth. Anne was not able to provide Henry with the son she had promised, and charges of adultery were eventually brought against her. Anne was found guilty, although it is extremely likely that the charges brought against her were fake. She was sentenced to death, and she was executed in a French-style beheading in London in 1536.
