Occupation: Pope, Archbishop, Cardinal
Date of Birth: May 26, 1478
Date of Death: September 25, 1534
Place of Birth: Florence, Italy
Place of Death: Rome, Italy
Giulio de Medici was born to Giuliano de Medici and a certain Fioretta, daughter of Antonia in Florence in 1478. His father was assassinated in a conspiracy in Florence, which left him an orphan. Giulio was brought to his own house by Lorenzo de Medici, who has Giulio educated with his two sons. His cousin, Pope Leo X, made Giulio archbishop of Florence and granted him a dispensation for his illegitimate birth, which was followed by a declaration that stated his parents had actually been married in secret, thereby making him legitimate. In 1513 the Pope further advanced him, making him a cardinal. Upon the death of Pope Adrian VI, Giulio was elected pope in 1523. The election of Giulio, now Pope Clement VII, was hailed by the people, because they thought it would mean happier times. In reality, Pope Clement VII proved to be timid and indecisive. Pope Clement VII is important to the English Reformation, because he is the pope who evaded King Henry VIII's demand for a nullification of his marriage to his wife, Katherine of Aragon. Although Clement most likely denied Henry's request due to his dependence on Katherine's nephew, Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, it still led to the separation between the Catholic Church and England. Clement died of an unknown cause in 1534 in Rome.
