Born Henry Tudor in 1491, King Henry VIII of England was the second son of Henry VII of England and Elizabeth of York. Henry was second in line to the throne of England, behind his older brother Arthur Tudor. Henry's parents raised him for a career in the Church, but when Arthur died, Henry became the new heir apparent. He assumed the throne after the death of his father in 1509. He married his first wife, Katherine of Aragon, and the two were crowned at Westminster Abbey. They were married until Henry divorced her in 1533 for his second wife, Anne Boleyn. His marriage to Anne was short lived, however, and it ended with Anne loosing her head. Henry ended up marrying four times after his marriage to Anne. His four other wives were Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleves, Katherine Howard, and Catherine Parr. Katherine Howard, his fifth wife, faced a similar fate to that of Anne Boleyn. Additionally, Henry is well known for turning his country into a Protestant nation and creating the Church of England. Henry's decision to leave the Catholic Church had long lasting effects on England. Henry died in London in 1547, most likely due to a jousting injury from his younger years.
