Katherine of Aragon was born in 1485 in Madrid, Spain to parents King Ferdinand of Aragon and and Queen Isabella of Castile. As a princess of Spain and daughter of the two most powerful European monarchs at the time, Katherine was destined for greatness. An arrangement was made between King Henry VII of England and Ferdinand and Isabella to marry Katherine to Henry VII's oldest son, Arthur. Katherine of Aragon was married to Arthur for a short time before he died of sickness. In an effort to maintain an alliance with Spain, Henry VII proposed that Katherine marry his second son, and the new heir to the throne, Henry Tudor. Katherine had to wait, however, as Henry VII continually postponed the wedding in order to try to find a more beneficial marriage for his son. Eventually, Henry VII died and his son took over the throne as King Henry VIII. Katherine and Henry were finally able to marry, and the two were crowned at Westminster Abbey. Katherine was a loving wife, but she was not able to give Henry what he most wanted: a son. This eventually led to Henry ending the marriage and marrying Anne Boleyn, although Katherine believed that she was Henry's true wife until the day of her death. She died in Kimbolton, Cambridgeshire, England in 1536, most likely due to cancer.
